Description
It’s Not Just a Folded Box
Rigid boxes are built differently from folding cartons. They’re constructed by hand (or semi-automated) from thick greyboard, then wrapped with printed paper. That’s why they’re called “rigid” — they hold their shape permanently.
Here’s the process.
Step 1: Greyboard Cutting
The box starts as thick greyboard, typically 1.5–2.5mm. We cut it into the exact shapes needed:
- Two panels for the lid
- Two panels for the base
- Corner reinforcements
This is the structural skeleton of the box.
Step 2: Corner Forming
The greyboard panels are joined at the corners:
- Standard — Corner tape or glue
- Premium — Mitered corners for a seamless look
Better corner work = cleaner box.
Step 3: Paper Wrapping
A printed sheet of art paper is wrapped around the greyboard frame:
- Paper is glued to the board
- Corners are folded precisely
- Excess paper is trimmed
This is the most skilled step. Bad wrapping = wrinkled corners, misaligned paper.
Step 4: Drying & Pressing
The wrapped box goes through a press to ensure:
- Paper is flat and smooth
- Corners are sharp
- No bubbles or wrinkles
Step 5: Quality Control
Every box is checked:
- Corners are clean
- Printing is aligned
- No scratches or dents
- Lid fits properly
