Hidden Costs
- Die-cut fee — Custom shapes have tooling cost
- Plate fee — Printing plates (one-time, per color)
- Sample cost — Pre-production sample
- Rush fee — Faster production = extra cost
- Shipping — Often 20–40% of box cost
- Custom size — New die-cut + setup fee
Cost-Saving Tips
- Order in bulk — Unit price drops fast at 5,000+
- Use standard sizes — Only go custom when necessary
- Simplify printing — One or two colors, not full color
- Skip fancy finishing — Save foil/embossing for hero SKUs
- Combine SKUs — Same box design, different labels
- Plan ahead — Avoid rush production fees
Common Cost Mistakes
- Ordering too few — Paying 2.5x per box
- Over-customizing — Foil + embossing + window on every SKU
- Underestimating shipping — Shipping costs as much as boxes
- No sample budget — Saved (100 on sample, lost )5,000 on bad bulk
- Wrong paper weight — Too thin = box bends; too thick = wasted money
- Not comparing quotes — Different factories quote very differently
