Whether workers wear anti-static wrist straps, whether workstations are properly grounded, and how packaging materials are stored in the warehouse—all these factors affect the final outcome. While a packaging manufacturer can ensure the materials themselves meet standards, the client must personally oversee static control during the final assembly and packaging stages. Success requires effort from both sides; relying solely on the packaging materials isn’t enough.

Last year, a client manufacturing Bluetooth speakers shipped their first batch to Germany; out of over two hundred cartons, eleven were returned because the units wouldn’t turn on. Upon inspection, the circuit boards were intact, but vibrations during transit had shaken the battery connectors loose. Their packaging consisted of two foam inserts inside a retail box, placed within a triple-walled corrugated shipping carton for air transport. While this setup works for lightweight items, speakers contain magnets and batteries—creating a bottom-heavy center of gravity—and the foam lacked proper securing mechanisms. As the carton shifted in the cargo hold, the contents were subjected to uncontrolled, free-floating impacts.

Consequently, packaging for this product category is usually designed with multiple layers: an inner layer for anti-static protection, a middle layer for cushioning and securing the product, and an outer layer for compression resistance—with each layer serving a specific purpose. Clients sometimes ask if this can be simplified to a single layer; the answer depends on the product’s value and the shipping distance, but for export orders, cutting corners is generally not recommended.

Packaging for electronic products involves more than just fitting the item inside.

While standard retail boxes handle display and basic protection, packaging for electronics must address three additional challenges: static electricity, impact, and compliance with various countries’ labeling requirements. Given the high unit value of these products, a failure isn’t merely a matter of replacing a box; it can result in the entire unit being scrapped and lead to customer complaints.

Static electricity is invisible, but it shows up clearly on repair reports.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage is particularly troublesome; it often cannot be detected during factory testing and may only manifest after the customer has used the product for a couple of weeks.

Components such as chips, MOSFETs, and sensors are highly sensitive to static electricity. The standard packaging solution is to wrap the product in anti-static materials—options include anti-static shielding bags, anti-static bubble bags, and anti-static foam. There is a distinction here that is easily overlooked: shielding bags protect against penetration by external electrostatic fields, whereas anti-static bubble bags prevent static generation caused by friction against the material itself. Since they serve different purposes, mixing them up results in a waste of money. Anti-static materials are further classified based on surface resistance; when selecting a material, you must confirm the specific grade with the manufacturer—simply asking for “anti-static material” in general terms is not enough.

Managing the workshop environment is just as important.
