Description
Broken Bottles = Lost Money
Wine shipping breakage rates average 3–5% with poor packaging. That means for every 100 bottles you ship, 3–5 arrive broken. The right shipping box and insert reduces that to under 0.5%. We design wine shipping boxes that protect your bottles from the warehouse to the recipient’s door.
Shipping Protection Levels
Level | Type de boîte | Insérer | Idéal pour |
Notions de base | Single-wall corrugated | Cardboard divider | Local hand delivery |
Standard | Double-wall corrugated | Molded pulp insert | Courier shipping |
Premium | Double-wall + outer carton | Foam insert | Long-distance / fragile |
Insulated | Double-wall + insulation | Pulp + ice pack | Temperature-sensitive wines |
Gift Box vs Shipping Box
Don’t confuse the two:
Gift Box | Shipping Box | |
Purpose | Beautiful presentation | Protects in transit |
Matériau | Rigid cardboard, wrapped paper | Double-wall corrugated |
Insérer | Velvet / satin for display | Molded pulp for protection |
Stack strength | Low (display only) | High (warehouse stacking) |
Drop test | Not required | Must pass 76cm drop test |
Rule: Use a gift box for presentation, then put it inside a shipping box for transit.
Molded Pulp Insert
The industry standard:
- Molded from recycled paper pulp
- Cradles the bottle at neck and base
- Shock-absorbing
- Eco-friendly and biodegradable
- Fits most standard 750ml bottles
Idéal pour : Most wine shipping. Cost-effective and reliable.
Foam Insert
Premium protection:
- Custom-cut EVA or PU foam
- Precise fit for your specific bottle shape
- Maximum shock absorption
- Reusable (customer can keep it)
- Higher cost than pulp
Idéal pour : Premium wines, fragile bottles, long-distance shipping.
Insulated Shipping
For temperature-sensitive wine:
- Double-wall box + foil insulation liner
- Add ice pack for summer shipping
- Keeps wine cool for 24–48 hours
- Required for fine wines and champagne
Idéal pour : Summer shipping, temperature-sensitive wines, interstate/international shipping.
Wine Shipping Breakage Rates
Packaging Type | Breakage Rate |
No box, just wrapping | 10–15% |
Single wall + paper | 5–8% |
Double wall + cardboard divider | 2–3% |
Double wall + molded pulp insert | 0.5–1% |
Double wall + custom foam insert | Under 0.5% |
The insert is what makes the difference, not just the box.
Common Wine Shipping Mistakes
- Using gift box as shipping box — Gift box isn’t strong enough for transit
- No molded insert — Bottle rattles around and breaks
- Bottle not secure at neck — Neck snaps on impact
- No outer shipping carton — Gift box gets crushed in transit
- No insulation in summer — Wine spoils in heat
- Under-sized box — Bottle touches sides, breaks on impact
