Installation d'aimants sur des boîtes : encastrement et fixation par traction

The magnetic strength must be carefully calibrated. It is determined by the size, quantity, and thickness of the magnets: if too strong, the box is hard to open and the structure may eventually be damaged; if too weak, the lid won’t close securely. The design goal is for the box to “snap shut with a gentle touch and open with a light lift”—a balance achieved through testing physical samples.

The tactile feel of a magnetic box comes from the magnets embedded within the chipboard. Even a slight deviation in position or thickness can completely alter the closing performance. This article explains the magnet installation process, offering practical guidance for clients producing these boxes.

Precision in positioning and alignment is crucial. The magnets in the lid and base must be perfectly symmetrical to ensure they align correctly when closing; a deviation of just one millimeter can skew the magnetic pull and make the closing action feel “off.” Alignment jigs should be used during prototyping, and magnet placement must be spot-checked during mass production—this step cannot be skipped.

Preventing surface bumps is a key technical detail. If a magnet isn’t embedded flush, the covering paper will bulge, compromising the box’s flatness and print quality; the depth of the milled slot, the magnet thickness, and the covering paper thickness must all be perfectly matched. Surface bulging is the most common manufacturing defect in magnetic boxes and requires specific attention during quality inspection.

There are specific techniques for embedding magnets. A common method involves milling a slot in the chipboard, inserting the magnet, and then covering it with paper; the magnet must be embedded deeply and lie flat, flush with the chipboard surface. Another method is “magnet wrapping”—encasing the magnet in fabric or paper before installation to prevent sharp edges from scratching the user.

How are magnets utilized in packaging? They are embedded in the lid and base, relying on magnetic attraction to facilitate opening and closing. This replaces mechanical latches or tuck-in flaps, resulting in a smoother action and a more premium feel. Magnetic closures are a hallmark feature for upgrading the tactile experience of high-end gift boxes, book-style boxes, and flip-top boxes.

A few important considerations: Magnet polarity—opposite poles must face each other (installing them incorrectly causes repulsion); shipping magnetization—risks must be assessed when shipping magnets in the same carton as electronic products; and environmental compliance—some markets have specific requirements regarding magnet materials. Quality acceptance for magnetic boxes involves a step-by-step review of magnetic strength, surface flatness, and the feel of the opening/closing action.
