V-Grooving Explained: One-Piece Boxes and Hinges

What is V-grooving? A V-shaped groove is milled into the back of the cardboard, leaving only a thin connecting layer; when folded along this groove, the board bends neatly into a precise right angle or a smooth curve. V-grooving enables the cardboard to “turn corners” and serves as the foundation for complex box shapes and hinged-lid structures.

What are the challenges of V-grooving? Misaligned grooves result in crooked box lines; uneven groove depths lead to irregular corners; and burrs at the groove opening cause messy edges. The process requires precise positioning according to blueprints, with strict monitoring of machine accuracy and operational stability.

How do you inspect V-grooved boxes? Check for square corners, straight lines, smooth lid movement, and the absence of cracks along the fold lines. Perform folding tests—opening and closing the box multiple times—to ensure a consistent, smooth feel. A well-executed V-groove ensures the box closes with a clean, seamless line.

Where is V-grooving used? It is essential for the hinged edges of book-style boxes, the wrapped edges of lid-and-base boxes, one-piece complex boxes, and the corners of window boxes—anywhere a “clean, crisp fold” is required. The placement and angle of the V-groove determine the aesthetic quality of the box’s folded lines.

What is the difference between V-grooving and creasing? Creasing involves “pressing a fold line” and is suitable for thinner cardboard (such as color cartons); V-grooving involves “milling out a groove” and is ideal for thicker cardboard (such as greyboard gift boxes). Using the wrong method—V-grooving thin board or creasing thick board—results in either an inability to fold properly or the material cracking.

How is V-groove depth controlled? If the groove is too deep, the fold line may crack and structural strength decreases; if it is too shallow, the board is difficult to fold, and the corner may bulge. Depth is adjusted based on the cardboard thickness; determining the remaining thickness requires both experience and adherence to standards. The depth of the V-groove directly determines the final shape and quality of the box.

One-piece boxes and book-style boxes with smooth-operating lids often rely on V-grooving technology: a V-shaped groove is cut into the back of the greyboard or cardboard, allowing it to fold into a crisp, clean edge. This article explains the V-grooving process, serving as a useful reference for clients producing gift boxes and custom-shaped packaging.
