Non-Compliant Packaging Gets Rejected

Retailers and Amazon have strict packaging rules. Barcodes in the wrong place, wrong carton strength, no shelf-ready packaging — your shipment can get rejected or sent back. Getting compliance right saves time, money and headaches.

Amazon FBA Requirements

Requirement	Specification
Carton strength	32 ECT minimum (single wall)
Weight limit	Under 22.5 kg per carton
Barcode	FNSKU label on each unit
Carton label	Shipping label on top and side
Single SKU per carton	Unless mixed and labeled properly
No loose items	Each unit must be packaged

Key: FBA doesn’t accept loose products. Every unit must be in a retail-ready carton.

Barcode Placement

Requirement	Specification
Barcode type	EAN-13 or UPC-A
الحجم	30–40mm wide minimum
Placement	Bottom right of back panel
Quiet zone	5mm clear space around barcode
Contrast	Black barcode on white background
Scannable	Must scan on first try

Common mistake: Barcode too close to edge, or printed on a curved surface — doesn’t scan.

GS1 Standards

GS1 is the global barcode standard:

You need a GS1 company prefix to get UPC/EAN codes

Each product variant needs its own barcode

Barcode must match the product on the label

No handwritten or home-made barcodes

Note: Some sellers use “registry” barcodes — these work but may cause issues with major retailers.

Shelf-Ready Packaging (SRP)

Major retailers (Walmart, Target, Tesco) require shelf-ready:

Cartons open easily for shelf stocking

Product facing visible when opened

Hanging tab or shelf stand

Easy to tear open (perforations)

Minimal stocking time for store staff

Benefit: Shelf-ready cartons get better shelf placement because stores save labor time.

Retail Chain Compliance

Retailer	Key Requirement
Amazon FBA	FNSKU labels, 32 ECT minimum
Walmart	GS1 barcode, shelf-ready packaging
Target	Vendor compliance labeling
Tesco/UK	Barcode on flat surface, scannable
Carrefour/EU	CE marking, nutrition info
Local retail	Usually just scannable barcode
