Description
Non-Compliant Packaging Gets Rejected
Retailers and Amazon have strict packaging rules. Barcodes in the wrong place, wrong carton strength, no shelf-ready packaging — your shipment can get rejected or sent back. Getting compliance right saves time, money and headaches.

Common mistake: Barcode too close to edge, or printed on a curved surface — doesn’t scan.
GS1 Standards
GS1 is the global barcode standard:
- You need a GS1 company prefix to get UPC/EAN codes
- Each product variant needs its own barcode
- Barcode must match the product on the label
- No handwritten or home-made barcodes
Note: Some sellers use “registry” barcodes — these work but may cause issues with major retailers.
Shelf-Ready Packaging (SRP)
Major retailers (Walmart, Target, Tesco) require shelf-ready:
- Cartons open easily for shelf stocking
- Product facing visible when opened
- Hanging tab or shelf stand
- Easy to tear open (perforations)
- Minimal stocking time for store staff
Benefit: Shelf-ready cartons get better shelf placement because stores save labor time.

Common Compliance Mistakes
- Barcode on curved surface — Doesn’t scan at checkout
- Wrong carton strength for FBA — Cartons crush in warehouse
- No shelf-ready design — Retailer rejects or charges a fee
- Barcode too small — Scanner can’t read it
- Mixed SKUs in one carton — FBA rejects mixed shipments
- No FNSKU label — Every unit needs one for FBA
- Barcode printed on textured paper — Doesn’t scan reliably
- Carton over 22.5 kg — Amazon requires special handling
