A Scratched Product Is A Returned Product

Polished metal, glossy plastic, glass screens, painted surfaces — these get scratched easily. A rough foam insert that looks “protective” can actually scratch the product during shipping. The right insert material protects both from impact AND from surface damage.

What Causes Scratches in Packaging?

Cause	How It Happens
Product rubs against insert	Movement during shipping creates friction
Rough insert material	Hard foam or cardboard scratches soft surfaces
Particles in insert	Dust or paper fibers scratch polished surfaces
Product touches another product	Pieces rub together inside the box
Insert edge is sharp	Cut foam edges scratch product surface

Anti-Scratch Insert Comparison

Material	Softness	Scratch Risk	Best For
Velvet / flocked lining	Very soft	None	Polished metal, luxury goods
Satin / silk lining	Smooth	Very low	Jewelry, watches
Soft-touch EVA foam	Medium-soft	Low	Electronics, gadgets
PE foam (EPE)	Soft, cushioned	Low-Medium	General protection
Rigid foam (PU)	Firm	Medium-High	Heavy products, not delicate
Cardboard / paper	Rough	High	Only for non-delicate items
Tissue paper wrap	Smooth, soft	Very low	Extra layer of protection

Velvet / Flocked Lining

The gold standard for scratch protection:

Soft velvet fabric covers the insert

Zero scratch risk on polished surfaces

Luxury feel and look

Best for: watches, jewelry, polished metal, premium products

Cost: Higher than plain foam, but worth it for high-value products.

Soft-Touch EVA Foam

Good middle ground:

EVA foam with smooth surface

Custom die-cut to product shape

Protects from impact and scratches

Cheaper than velvet lining

Best for: electronics, gadgets, cosmetic bottles

Tissue Paper Wrap

Extra layer of protection:

Wrap product in tissue paper before placing in insert

Adds a soft barrier between product and insert

Also adds to unboxing experience

Cheap and effective

Best for: all delicate products as an extra layer
