A Box for Your Product — Not a Box for Everyone
A standard gift box holds anything. A custom product case holds your specific product — perfectly. Every cavity is shaped to your parts. Every compartment fits your pieces. The result is packaging that doubles as storage, display and protection.
Gift Box vs Product Case
Factor | Gift Box | Product Case |
Purpose | Present the product | Protect and store the product |
Interior | Simple tray or insert | Custom cavities for every part |
Reusability | Thrown away after unboxing | Kept as storage case |
Durability | Light, one-time use | Sturdy, built to last |
Exterior | Decorative paper | Leather, wood-texture, durable laminate |
Hardware | Maybe a ribbon or clasp | Handle, clasps, hinges, latches |
Best for | Single-product gifts | Multi-part sets, games, tools |
What Products Need a Custom Case
Tipo de producto | Why a Case? |
Board games / mahjong | Many pieces need organized storage |
Tool kits | Tools need fixed positions, protection |
Collectibles / figurines | Fragile items need custom cavities |
Tea sets | Teapot, cups, accessories all need spots |
Cosmetic travel kits | Multiple bottles, brushes, mirrors |
Art / stationery sets | Brushes, pens, paints organized |
Jewelry travel sets | Rings, necklaces, earrings each have place |
How Custom Interiors Are Engineered
The interior is the most important part of a product case. Every piece needs its own cavity.
Step | What Happens |
1. Measure every part | Each product piece is measured precisely |
2. Design cavities | CAD design of custom foam/wood cavities |
3. Prototype | Physical sample cut and tested with real products |
4. Adjust | Cavities tweaked for perfect fit |
5. Bulk production | Once fit is approved, mass produce |
Rule: Every piece should fit snugly — no rattling, but easy to remove.
The Mahjong Case Shown Here
This leather-textured mahjong case demonstrates a custom product case:
- Brown leather exterior — Durable, looks like a real case
- Gold foil decoration — Mahjong tile motif + scrollwork
- Leather handle — Carry like a briefcase
- Metal clasps — Secure closure, opens like a suitcase
- Custom interior — Compartments for each tile suit (dots, characters, bamboos, flowers, winds)
- Center compartment — For dice, chips, or accessories
Case Exterior Materials
Material | Durability | Look |
Leather-grain laminate | Good | Premium, handbag feel |
Wood-texture paper | Good | Rustic, natural |
Coated rigid board | Fair | Standard, budget |
PU leather wrap | Excellent | Real leather feel, durable |
Fabric wrap | Fair | Soft, textile look |
Best for product cases: Leather-grain or PU leather. It’s durable, looks premium, and can be wiped clean.
Case Hardware
Hardware matters on a product case — it gets used repeatedly.
Hardware | Purpose |
Carry handle | Portable, take it anywhere |
Metal clasps | Secure closure, reusable |
Hinges | Lid stays open |
Corner protectors | Reinforce high-wear corners |
Zipper | Alternative to clasps |
Tip: Don’t skimp on hardware. A cheap clasp that breaks after 10 opens ruins the whole case.
When a Custom Case Is Worth It
Scenario | Worth It? |
Multi-part products (10+ pieces) | Yes — organization is essential |
Products customers keep long-term | Yes — case doubles as storage |
High-value products | Yes — protection matters |
Products with fragile parts | Yes — custom cavities prevent damage |
Low-cost single-item products | No — overkill |
One-time gift packaging | No — a simple box is enough |
Common Custom Case Mistakes
- No sample test — Cavities don’t fit products after production
- Cheap hardware — Clasps break, handles tear
- Thin board — Case flexes, doesn’t feel solid
- No lid stay — Lid falls shut on customer’s fingers
- Ignoring wall thickness — Cavity dimensions don’t account for walls
- Too tight cavities — Products can’t be removed
- Too loose cavities — Products rattle and get damaged
